INDIA is a south Asian country, which has diverse terrain made up of 29 States and 7 Union Territories, with total 79.42 million hectare of forest area. India contains some of the rarest beautiful animal species, from the world famous Bengal Tiger, to the rarest Lion Tailed Macaque and thousands of ants and frog species.
These animals are embedded on our National Emblem, apart from it, each of the Indian-States have their own state seals and symbols which include state animals, birds, trees, flowers and even butterflies.

1. State butterfly- Blue Mormon (Papilio polymnestor)
Maharashtra is the first state in the country to have a “State Butterfly”.
Blue Mormon - a large swallowtail butterfly with beautiful velvety black upper wings, simply amazing.
This heavenly butterfly is mainly found in South-India and in Sri Lanka.
On 22nd June 2015 this butterfly was declared as the state butterfly of Maharashtra.
2. State animal - Indian giant squirrel(Ratufa indica)
The Indian giant squirrel rarely leaves the trees, its natural habitat is on tall branched trees which are required for the construction of its nest. It travels from tree to tree with jumps of up to 6m (20 ft).
They are typically solitary animals that only come together for breeding. The species is believed to play a substantial role in shaping the ecosystem of its habitat by engaging in seed dispersal.
Also known as Shekru in Marathi. Indian giant squirrel is one of the beautiful and largest tree squirrel in the world.
3. State bird – Yellow footed green pigeon (Treron phoenicoptera)
The yellow-footed green pigeon also known as yellow-legged green pigeon, is a common species of green pigeon found in the Indian subcontinent.
This Green Pigeon feeds on fruits and edible seeds, it’s commonly seen in dense forest.
In Marathi it is called “Hariyal”.
4. State Tree- Mango (Mangifera indica)
Popularly known as the stone fruit and majorly confused as the National tree of India, it is the state tree of Maharashtra. Also, the fruit mango is considered as king of all fruits.
